Full disclosure- The Chicks (formerly known as The Dixie Chicks) were one of my first concerts ever. I don’t remember a lot from it but I do remember it was at the Iowa State Fair and my dad took me. It’s been a long time since then and, if I’m being honest, I’m not sure I would jump on the opportunity to see them again just because their music doesn’t really resonate with me. That being said, Wild Divide’s cover of their song “Cowboy Take Me Away” has me hooked.
We all know The Chicks’ sound. It’s southern drenched country with an undeniable twang and soft sensibilities. That is far from what you get with this cover from Wild Divide. They took The Chicks’ sound and turn it into something so much more extreme and intense. There’s screaming and chaos where there should be beautiful singing and calmness. Honestly, as you listen to this cover, it’s hard to keep in mind that it was originally a song from The Chicks but that’s the magic of it. Covers are hard for me because why would you ever just want to copy someone else but Wild Divide has done more than cover this song, they have completely changed it to something brand new while still giving nods to the original track and musicians. Even if The Chicks aren’t quite your thing, this cover of “Cowboy Take Me Away” from Wild Divide will be for you!
