Okay, I’ll be honest, the first time I saw this song come across my desk, I instantly thought it was a cover of Billie Eillsh’s “Bad Guy”. I honestly pretty much wrote it off and figured I would just move on but I hit play accidentally and what I heard was far from a cover– it was a genius track that instantly hooked me.
“Bad Guy” starts off with pop-punk perfect gang vocals. They feel organic although I’m sure they were perfectly curated to sound the way they do. The instantly snagged my attention and, as the song moved on, I couldn’t help but fall deep in love with Pine Creek Academy. This is a pop-punk perfect song through and through but with an alt-rock twist. It’s a common genre-bend that I’ve heard a million times before but Pine Creek Academy has truly made this sound their own and as this three and a half minute song played through, I couldn’t help but start jamming out to the music. It’s a powerful song with an anthemic chorus but there’s definitely an edge here. Instead of “loser gets the girl” type lyrics like many pop-punk songs, “Bad Guy” is a track about wanting to be the bad person for a change. It’s a bold statement with an even bolder hook and it’s the perfect way to kick off your Saturday.
