Girl at the Rock Shows

Downtown was feeling full of life on Saturday night. Honestly, it was a nice change. I feel like lately, downtown has been feeling more like a ghost town than a bustling metropolis so to see so many people out and about on Saturday night made me so happy. It had the air buzzing with excitement from the moment I left my car and through my two block walk to the 7th Street Entry. The line for First Avenue’s mainroom was down the block (don’t worry, there’s a review of that show coming after this one because I’m a freak and one show a night just isn’t enough for me anymore) but there was no line for the 7th Street Entry. It had me nervous that, although downtown was busy, the Entry was going to be dead but, as soon as I got through security, it was clear that the excitement had seeped into the Entry and I was just running a bit late.

Opener Izek Rose is the self-proclaimed “king of soft knocks” at least that’s what his bio says. I honestly don’t know what that means but I know that I was in love with this performer as soon as he kicked into his opening set. With a mix of EDM, pop-punk, emo, and rock all wrapped up into one, I watched Izek Rose as he seamlessly switched from commanding the audience from behind a keyboard and computer to serenading the audience from behind the microphone. Although I was nevr quite able to put my finger on his style, I liked how he wrapped so many different feelings and sounds into his set. Out of the entire set, it was definitely his closing song where I finally saw just how talented Izek Rose was. He stood there with just a guitar and his voice while giving the audience an undeniable sense of heart and passion. It wasn’t the most exciting song of the set and the audience wasn’t bopping around to this final song like that had the previous tracks but this more sensitive side of Izek Rose was absolutely gorgeous.

I’ll be honest, I had gone into this show completely blind and not knowing anything about anyone so when Asher Postman, the second act, took the stage alone behind a bunch of electronics, I started to worry that this was not going to be the show for me. Sure, I found some things in Izek Rose’s set that I really liked but I was also bouncing between two shows and I was afraid that just solo artists was not going to keep my attention when things were definitely popping off upstairs in the mainroom. As soon as Asher started performing, that fear fell to the wayside. Asher’s music, like Izek Rose’s, was a bit all over the place and I just don’t have the right words or verbiage to describe to accurately but I can say that I feel that Asher leaned a bit deeper into the pop-punk influence that had been hinted at throughout Izek Rose’s set. This vibe had the audience, who had grown to a packed crowd, bouncing up and down to the heavy and infectious beats creating an almost party-like atmosphere that I found it hard to leave when it was time to transfer back up to the other show.

This was a theme of Saturday night in the 7th Street Entry. I felt a little out place due to everyone else seeming to be meeting up with old friends but the music made me feel like I was part of a group. I didn’t know the songs like the other people around me. I didn’t know when the beat was going to drop or when the vocals would overpower the tracks but I knew that the music was making me want to move so I did just that. Sure, I was alone at this show (other than a friend that was joining me for the entire night) but as I stood there bopping around to Asher Postman’s infectious sounds, I couldn’t help but feel like I was part of everyone else’s party and I loved it.

The fun and party-like atmosphere didn’t end when Asher Postman wrapped up his set. Instead, it was amplified as headlinr helloworld took the stage. Apparently I’ve been living under a rock. I had never heard of helloworld before and was only at this show because I figured, why not? Everyone else in the audience had clearly been waiting for a chance to see Drew Wilken (AKA helloworld) for awhile as the crowd exploded the second he took the stage.

helloworld’s music was much like the previous three acts. Very track heavy with an electronic influence but pop tendencies. Long story short, not my thing but helloworld’s performance was definitely up my alley. He brought such a stunning sense of energy to the track that it was hard to not fall in love with him. Beyond that was how, although he was playing to tracks, there was something super genuine about his music and voice. I’ve gotten over my anti-track thing. I used to hate acts that didn’t play with a live band because I had always looked it as a cop-out and it typically translated to a heartless performance in my mind but helloworld had my mind changed. From the way he interacted with the audience, got them moving, and how his voice truly soared throughout the venue, I was sold and all about the raw and genuine performance he was giving the excited crowd.

Saturday night at the 7th Street Entry was definitely a bit different than what I’m used to but that’s what made it so fun. I love jumping into whole new worlds via live music and that’s exactly what all three of the performers gave me. So what are you waiting for? Go to a show you know nothing about and dive in head first. I promise it’s not as scary as it sounds and you may end up with a few new favorite acts from it.
