I thought winter was over so I threw my favorite beanie into the pile of laundry I have going at home. Then, just like that, winter was not over and it ended up snowing all day yesterday. I was not about to leave the house without a hat on but my favorite beanie was somewhere in the mess of my laundry room so I had to find a different one. I dug and dug, looking for the perfect winter hat to resurrect from my vast collection and landed on my Smith Street Band hat. I honestly forgot I had it, but it was like fate. Not only is it a super cute and warm hat, but it also made me travel back down the Smith Street Band trail- one I haven’t been down in many years. It brought so much joy to my heart and ears alike. Fate continued to play games with my heart by introducing me to What You’re Made Of by way of their single “I Just Need a Minute.” This song gave me all of the Smith Street Band vibes and more.
A song about the damn work/ life balance that none of us seem to be able to find, this is a high energy song that will grab you by the heart and never let go. Complete with shouted gang vocals and heavy guitars, I love how this song can take such a touchy topic and make it such a slight-rage filled anthem that makes you want to throw your fists in the air. Although I definitely picked up on a Smith Street band vibe in this song, I also got a slightly poppier The Wonder Years vibe that came through here and there adding a twist to the banger of the track. Whether you lean into the tenderness that dazzles in this song or, like me, get lost in the strength of the subtle shouting happening here, you will get hooked by What You’re Made Of with “I Just Need a Minute” in just one listen.
