Life is exhausting. Some days I feel it more than others and today is one of those days where I’m just feeling it. Thankfully, I’m not along and The Arcade’s new song, “Messed Up Kid,” addresses this feeling and is giving me all of the comfort I could possibly ask for on this super stressed-out and manic Tuesday.
As The Arcade puts it, “This one’s for the outsiders, the fighters, the ones who refuse to break.” I need that message and feeling my life right now and the fact that this Florida-based band serves it up with a bow of pop-punk perfection is hitting the spot. There’s an epic quality to this song, just with the amount of power that it will bring to your ears and heart, but there’s also a slight playfulness behind it that will take you back to the times when things were simpler. It’s a fun song with a heavy message which, as you know, is something that will also get me. Whether you’re looking for some fun on this Tuesday morning or, like me, need a little motivational pep-talk to get into the grind of yet another exhausting day, The Arcade’s “Messed Up Kid” is the song for you.

This song hits hard, it’s a powerful song to go through hard days indeed. Our true relation with time, not the time we understand, but the one we experience really, is not linear, not a road where past gets always more distant and we more disconnected and less and less affected by it. In our experience of being, parts of the past can appear to us more vivid, and more meaningful than they were at the time it happened 2, 5, 14 years ago. Our mind is not going back, it’s actually right here, right now, where the heart goes. Good memories are where the heart travels to because they belong to it. And sometimes, it goes back to unsolved ones. Looking closely, the heart is trying to warmly embrace and heal a wound that is still there. Songs like this show slaps us in the face, and like cold water, we wake up to the unescapable truth that we are hurt, that we are still the punk kid that won’t bend for any of this shit, unstoppable, and that this heart of us is brave, sad, powerful, broken, wise, impulsive, curious, happy, naive… beating
“I won’t make amends for things I did when I was on the edge
All the unintended consequences and burning of every bridge
I’m not sorry”
Reminded me of what my drunk uncle once said at a barbecue: the great thing about burning bridges is that you can’t walk backwards, only forward
