I took the entire weekend off as a small birthday present to myself. I didn’t open up my computer other than to write a review of Saturday night’s show, and, honestly, it felt just so dang good. That being said, trying to jump into work this Monday morning has been a bit rough so I am looking for something to give me a burst of energy and the motivation to dig myself out of this hole that neglecting my email all weekend has created. Thankfully for me, AViVA just dropped “Sinister” on Friday, and it is everything I could have asked for and more.

“Sinister” is a dark and powerful track, but not in the way you may be expecting. The darkness is subtle with AViVA’s “made for pop” styled voice. I really can not understate just how smooth her vocals are or how clear her tone is, and I love the way it gives this song an almost pop overtone to the juxtaposing instrumentation. It’s a heavy-hitting track where, although the vocals are absolutely in the forefront, the instrumentation brings such a spice to the track. The video seems to reflect this. It’s a bombastic video shot in black and white with subtle pops of color here and there. Although overall, the video is simple as it portrays AViVA and her band playing through the song, there are jolts, glitches, and angular shots that add an extra little spice and edge to the visuals. AViVA is not a new act in any way, shape, or form. In fact, I saw her perform at Riot Fest years ago. Although I thought she was good, I truthfully wasn’t completely sold on her unique song, but letting “Sinister” play for the umpteenth time this morning while just getting lost in AViVA’s world has changed that narrative. AViVA is coming into her own, and I can’t wait to see what comes next.
