MNERVA claimed that their new track, “1 + U,” is “Relient K styled. Bold claim. Although not a die-hard Relient K fan, that band absolutely holds a place in my heart with their optimistic and often cheerful songs that make you think and bring me such a sense of comfort. Okay, MNERVA, let’s see if you are really worthy of comparing your new song to Relient K. Spoiler alert: They are worthy of this comparison and more.
“1+ U” is not the first song I’ve heard from MNERVA but it’s absolutely one of their songs that seemed to hook me a bit more than others. I love how, at the beginning of this song, you get a very Jack Keys or MGK kind of vibe, but as the song really starts to kick in, you do, in fact, get that sense of Relient K brightness. I also got a little Owl City sparkle, a little Mod Sun grit, and even a little Gym Class Heroes kind of hip-hop influence here and there. Long story short, not only is it okay for MNERVA to compare their sound in this song to Relient K, they could compare it to so many bands that mean so much to me, which is why this song, and this band in general, absolutely has me sold. Looking for some sunshine on a gloomy day? Maybe a little bump of energy or a shoulder to lean on? “1 + U” from MNERVA is what you’re looking for.
