I’m all about an element of fun in music. It keeps things fresh and, on hard and stressful days, keep me sane. That was the first thing that drew me into “Hate You Now” from Dolo Tonight. Dolo Tonight claims to be “on a mission to bring fun back into music” with “his own brand of ‘awkward anti-pop.'” Okay, Dolo Tonight, you have my attention! Let’s dig into “Hate You Now” and see if it truly is a fun song.
“Hate You Now” is one of the songs off of Dolo Tonight’s debut album ‘DVD Rental Store’, which is due out on Epitaph Records on October 3rd, and it absolutely does bring a sense of fun to the spotlight. The way this song kicks off is abrasive but in a good way. The vocals are raw and gritty, which is what welcomes you to Dolo Tonight’s world in this song. As the track moves forward, those vocals continue to be the star of the song as light instrumentation comes in to the backgroun,d including boisterous horns that, although large and in charge, still take a backseat to the vocals. The chorus of this song caught me off guard as it just felt so poppy compared to how this song starts off, but that’s just that “awkward anti-pop” song that Dolo Tonight does so well. “Hate You Now” is definitely not a standard song, but Dolo Tonight is not a standard act. Hearing this song absolutely has me counting down the days until I can check out ‘DVD Rental Store’ as a whole.
