At the time, I didn’t feel like a super popular kid in school, but, looking back on those formative years, I realize that my being very uncool and very much an individual in a school of a lot of plastics and politics actually did make me one of the “cooler kids” back then. I had a great group of friends, and if you asked us, it was cool to be in the marching band, and the bagpipe club ruled the popularity hierarchy. Long story short, I was pretty dang cool and popular back in my school days, it just took me some time and hearing “Popular Too” from MONTE to realize it.

Not only is this song infectiously fun, so is the music video. Everything about this song is bright and cheery but, at the same time, there’s a depth to the track. Like my cheesy little intro, this song is an anthem for the misfits. It’s a reminder that being so incredibly uncool and sticking to your guns, being yourself, makes you the coolest person around. I think, in a world where individualism can often be stifled, even if accidentally, this song is a good reminder that life is too short. Driving around in a convertible while your freak flag flies will always be better than trying to fit in, and eventually, you will find your people who agree. Honestly, I could probably go deeper when it comes to this song and MONTE’s sound overall but this was one of those songs that just made me smile and, on a morning like I’m having today, that’s all I could ever ask for.
