Jumper Boy’s new song “Elephants” is their first new music in two years. I’m not sure why this band took such a long break or anything like that but I know that I hate the fact that it took this “comeback” for me to catch onto this band. “Elephants” is a powerful song through and through and it has me so obsessed with Jumper Boy to the point where I’m looking to clear the rest of my day and just jump into some of their older material.

Before the break, Jumper Boy was clearly a thing. They were opening for bands like The Libertines and Hail the Sun, but you could feel that they were something just by listening to this new song rather than reading about their accolades. The song starts with a very cool math-rock feeling guitar and drums to match before the vocals come in and shoot this track off to the stars. There’s something oddly frantic about the instrumentation of this song due to the intriguing patterns being played, and I love the way that seems to juxtapose with the smoothness of the vocals. Although I call the vocals smooth, there is definitely a level of grit to them that helps tell the story of this song. It’s a song about everything from burnout to mental health, which is standard, but the word choice makes this song far from your typical track. The artistry that comes with the words matches the genius that comes with the instrumentation, making “Elephants” more than just a song to listen to, it’s a song to think about.
