Girl at the Rock Shows

I am far from a Roughsleeper. I am the kind of person who, as soon as my head hits a pillow or really any soft surface, I pass the heck out. It’s honestly a bit of a party trick of sorts, and I know that it makes people jealous. Sometimes I wish I didn’t have this trait. I’m not even able to just sit and watch a movie without falling asleep within minutes of sitting down. This honestly has nothing to do with “Just Leave” from Roughsleeper, but it’s what the band name made me think of, and I needed an intro, so here we are.

“Just Leave” is the first track off of Roughsleeper’s new EP ‘Everything is Getting Worse’ and, although I understand why this song is called “Just Leave,” I feel like that EP title would have worked as the name for this song just as well. This song is angsty and definitely has roots in Midwest emo, but there’s an almost skate-punk influence that comes through in this track, instantly hooking me. It’s a fast and furious kind of track. Even though it’s almost four minutes long, this song feels over in just the blink of an eye thanks to the sheer energy and speed with which it’s presented. Although it feels fast, Roughsleeper makes sure to give you a little bit of everything in this song– the tender and the intense, the sweet and the salty, the fire and the calm. It’s a beautiful showing of how much can be packed into just one song while still remaining a cohesive feeling and sound. I guess what I’m trying to say is hold on– “Just Leave” is a wild ride, but it’s absolutely one worth taking.
