I don’t have very much of a sweet tooth, but there’s something about sugary candy that just hits so hard on a sleepy Monday morning. I hate the fact that one of my co-workers brought a bag of leftover candy in because now all I’ve done is create a pile of candy wrappers on my desk and a self-induced stomach ache that I just can’t seem to shake. I don’t “Blame” this co-worker. I know I only have myself to “Blame.” Okay, terrible intro into this new song from the band Soft, but don’t let that stop you from checking out this truly mesmerizing track.
Honestly, when I hit play on this track, I almost instantly went to the skip button. The beginning of this song is slow and somber feeling. It’s light yet has a depth to it. It’s not at all what I look for on a Monday morning. I wanted aggressive and intense. This was calm and soothing. I went to hit skip, but something in my gut told me that wasn’t the right move and, within another few seconds, I felt trapped by Soft’s sound. That soft and somber lushness that I heard at the beginning definitely persists throughout this four-and-a-half-minute song, but that’s not the vibe that takes over this track after about a minute and a half. Things change quickly in this song, and before I knew it, my ears were being assaulted by the perfect level of angst and aggression in the vocals while my mind drifted into the textures and layers that were falling like snow behind said vocals. Long story short, always go with your gut and always give a song a chance. Even if the beginning of the track doesn’t strike you, there could be something amazingly stunning hidden in the track and that was absolutely the case when it came to “Blame” from Soft.
