Girl at the Rock Shows

For some reason, heavy music just doesn’t hit the same in the winter for me as it does in the summer. Maybe it’s me falling in love with the cozy vibes of falling snow and temperatures, or maybe it’s just the fact that I seem to be a bit more relaxed in the winter. Either way, I don’t get into a lot of heavy stuff this time of year, but there was no denying that I fell in love with “Extradition” from Banisher upon first listen this morning, even as the snow was falling outside of my window.

This song is dark, and it’s extreme, but there’s something super gorgeous about it at the same time. Based on a true story, “Extradition,” as the band puts it, ” tells the story about inmates being held and transported between jails and the methods of treating them during the process. It describes the feelings and subjective perception of the free world from the point of view of a person being held in custody. Appreciating all the views on the road, which were once in reach on a daily basis, are now seen through the barred windows of an armored vehicle. If you’re lucky enough to be extradited in a vehicle with windows at all.” Okay, that was a long description, but I feel like knowing this background on the song really adds a sense of depth to a song that already feels slightly heavy and oh so important. There’s angst and anger in this song but there’s also a light that shines through at certain moments throughout this five and a half minute long song. I’m not going to tell you where those bright spots are. You’ll just have to check it out for yourself and inevitably be dazzled by the power and thought behind Banisher.
