Girl at the Rock Shows

Last night was the First Avenue staff party and I am absolutely feeling it. I’m not just feeling the slight hangover, but feeling an insane amount of joy after having a night filled with such a stellar sense of community and love. It was a mix of familiar and new faces and a night of continuing to confuse people regarding if I work for the venue or not (spoiler alert: I don’t work for First Avenue but my boyfriend does which is how I got into the party). It was great but now it’s back to the grind. Back to the grind of work and keeping eyes on my community as we continue to be under siege by federal agents. I need a good soundtrack to help keep me going today and “Gone” from Carrying Torches is the perfect way to kick that soundtrack off.

This song is my favorite kind of song because, at face value, it’s a fun and boppy little jam but, as you follow the words throughout this three and a half minute long song, you realize that not everything is sunshine and rainbows. This song talks about everything from loss, survival and honesty. The vocals feel as vulnerable as they do empowered and the instrumentation seems to match that vibe. I love how the composition of this song doesn’t follow the path you think it may. Carrying Torches keeps you on your toes throughout “Gone” in such a brilliant yet flawless way. This song will take you down paths of self-awareness, energy-boosting highs, and gritty lows. Long story short, it’s perfect for those of us who are struggling to get moving this morning.
