I’m not going to say that today has been a bad day because it hasn’t. It’s just been one of those frustrating kinds of days. I’ve been keeping up with work but it’s been steadier than usual which means I have less time to check out new music than usual. My lunch honestly wasn’t that bad but the raspberries I brought just aren’t tasting as good as the last batch I had. Like I said, not a bad day, but just one of those days where I know just the slightest inconvenience is going to set me off a bit more and, one too many inconveniences and I will surely flip this desk. None of this has to do with “Square Peg” from No Pterodactyls but is more just a little look into my day and a small explanation as to why this is only the second song I’ve shared with you today.
I may not have a bunch of time to share out a bunch of singles with you today but I am absolutely making them count. Case in point? This track. The third single from No Pterodactyls’ upcoming album, “Square Peg” is an ode to jam bands. Personally, I’m not a huge jam band fan but, put on a little Dave Matthews and I will get lost in his world for a few hours with a smile on my face. Okay, I’m not naive, Dave is the most vanilla of all jam bands but I think you get the sentiment. Although not my normal world, No Pterodactyls instantly had me stuck in the palm of their hands. Honestly, I don’t even know if calling this a jam-band song is correct. It felt a bit more indie rock to me but there’s no denying the psychedelic undertones throughout this song or the organic and free feeling that comes through the vocals that seem to dance over everything else in such an effortless way. This song isn’t full of breakdowns. There’s next to no angst here and there’s nothing to bang your head to but that’s what makes it perfect. “Square Peg” is a world for those days where you feel like you’re white knuckling it a bit. For the days when you’re just one email away from a breakdown. I needed “Square Peg” and No Pterodactyls today,. You probably do too.
