It’s basically July, and I have yet to break out a swimsuit this summer. Truthfully, I hate swimsuits, but I love swimming, so I’m both heartbroken and okay with this fact. This also has absolutely nothing to do with “Smile” from Swimsuit Addition, but the name of this band has me realizing the fact that summer has almost come and gone, and all I’ve done is fill it with amazing new music, not outdoor adventures, and, like the lack of swimsuit needing occasions, I’m okay with that.
“Smile” is the first single from Swimsuit Addition’s album ‘Don’t Tell Me to Smile.’ This is an interesting album as it was recorded but never released before the band broke up in 2016. I hate that because this song had me hooked. This song is the perfect blend of sugar and spice. It starts off with an angsty and chanted intro before Swimsuit Addition falls into their post-punk meets indie rock sound. Even as the band settles into this sound, you still get these sparks of spice throughout the song that give this track a very real punk edge and spirit. Although this song was recorded nearly a decade ago, it’s a timely track with its rebellious attitude and talk about the importance of freedom and individuality. I’m not sure why the band decided to release this album (and this song) now, but I hope that maybe this means there’s a comeback coming for Chiago-based Swimsuit Addition.
