I’m in a daydream kind of mood. I don’t know why, but I do know that I’m looking for music that kind of matches the whimsical thoughts in my head, so when I saw that “Barry” from the Melbies was a fictional tale about a retired Olympic backflipper, I couldn’t resist. I hit play and went ahead and let my mind wander.
Although I was hooked by the imagery just reading the backstory of this song gave me, that’s not why I found myself hitting repeat on this quick, two-minute, and ten-second song over and over again. The reason I kept hitting repeat was how fast and hard-hitting this track is, while still having a super-organized feel. There are moments in this song that lean into something a bit more dramatic and almost funny, reminding me a bit of Tenacious D, but they’re followed by pure angst with a Turnstile kind of vibe. Overall, this song is slightly dampened with a taste of nostalgia with the old-school punk crunch that comes with it. Long story short: come for the creativity behind this song’s backstory, stay for the infectious energy. No matter what, you’ll fall in love with “Barry” from The Melbies.
