It’s almost time to bring the scarves out. It’s hard to believe that, but we are at the tail end of August. The Minnesota State Fair starts next week, and that’s always a sign of the end of summer. It’s time to start digging out all of the scarves, hats, and gloves for the winter. Maybe I’m being just a little preemptive here, but with a few vacations on the horizon, I know that it will be snowing before we know it. None of this has anything to do with “Strays Forever” by Scarves. This is merely what came to mind when this song came across my desk.
“Strays Forever” is the title track off of Scarves’ upcoming album due out on September 18th. It’s an indie-rock anthem through and through which, I know, doesn’t sound like anything new or spectacular, but hit play on this puppy and you will understand why I’m sharing this song with you all. It’s glittery and tender, but there’s a driving force behind this song that gives it a little extra zing. It doesn’t come across as angsty or aggressive, yet it’s something that definitely caught my attention and will surely catch yours. This is an emotional song, as it should be, since it’s part of an album that, as the band puts it, “follows a couple experiencing grief, anxiety, and the complicated hope of planning for a future worth bringing a baby into.” There’s a sorrow and a grief in that statement, much like there is in this song, but there’s also this feeling of beautiful and resilient hope. “Strays Forever” is a calm song, but it will light a fire in your heart in the best way possible.
