As usual, there are a million things that I should be doing right now but all I want to do is check out some new music. So don’t mind me while I ignore all of my chores and let’s check out OK Cool’s new EP ‘Surrealist’!

“I Should Buy A Sword” starts this EP off and instantly took me away into the world of OK Cool. The vocals are raw and the overall vibe of this opening track is very DIY in all of the right ways. It’s perfectly imperfect. Sure, if you’re a sound snob you’ll say something about the mix being off but, as a live show type of gal, I loved how this opening track sounded like I was watching OK Cool on a stage right in front of me. Oddly enough, the words of this track matched my current mood perfectly which I saw as a sign that this album stood out to me for a reason.

‘Surrealist’ continues on with “Five Finger Exploding Heart Technique”. There’s something infectious and fancy about this track that I instantly fell head over heels for. Again, I was struck by the rawness of the words. Not just the word choice but also the way they are presented. I wouldn’t call it conversational but there’s just something so open and normal about the vocals that brought me a sense of comfort while making it feel like I had been listening to this band for years. It’s an odd feeling that I haven’t gotten in reviews lately but a feeling that is a sign of an amazing band and release.

There’s something a bit more dreamy and atmospheric in “Hertz 2B”. Although this is a completely different sound and vibe than the previous tracks, it’s still clearly a track from OK Cool. This is the longest track on this five-song EP but it still seemed to fly by and, in the blink of an eye, “Hypervigilant” had taken over my speakers. I like that this track continues with the almost atmospheric vibe. This song starts with extraterrestrial-sounding swirls of notes before the vocals come in like a warm blanket. Although there’s something super comforting about all of the tracks on this EP, there’s something extra warm and cozy about this one. It’s just a little bit more dreamlike and a little more spaced out as if giving the listener a chance to just sit back and enjoy OK Cool in all of their glory.
