Happy Sunday everyone and happy Mother’s Day to all of the human moms, cat moms, dog moms– heck, happy Mother’s Day to everyone too! As usual, I should be spending my day cleaning the house and prepping for the upcoming week but I feel like I just want to spend my day checking out new music so that’s exactly what I’m going to do starting with this new EP from Wiff.

‘Definitely in the Maybe Pile’ starts with “Lowering My Standards” which instantly filled my house with a sense of calm and warmth. This opening track is short and sweet but absolutely packs a punch and lays the groundwork for what’s sure to be an amazing EP. There’s something familiar about the sound of Wiff yet something distinct which I instantly fell in love with. A blend of calming, almost acoustic vibes, and then something a bit more heavy-hitting, this track had me intrigued as to what I would get from the rest of this release.

All of the acoustic-y vibes went out the window as “Mormon on a Mission” took over my speakers. Although still inviting and warm, there’s no denying the edge that comes with this punk-drenched track. There’s a sense of dissonance throughout this track but there’s also a sense of control in it. I was instantly drawn to the energy that comes with this song and it definitely had me ready to take on the day, whatever it may bring. Although that energy continues through “Communique from the Sock Drawer”, the dissonance is replaced by a more classic indie-pop with punk tendencies sound. This was an instant favorite of mine. From the instrumentation to the lyrics, there was just something about this track that had me hooked. It’s anthemic and powerful while still having so much passion behind it, it’s seriously impossible to not fall in love with this song.

“Coffee is the Blue Pill” follows up “Communique from the Sock Drawer” perfectly. Although it still has an edge to it, there’s something a bit more pop-punk about this anthemic track. Although a lyrics lady who was falling head over heels for every word being sung, it was the drums in this track that really caught me. The tone of the drums is perfect and, although busy, every hit seemed to have a home to keep it from feeling like chaos. I love the restraint that this song had and loved how it reminded me of the restraint felt in “Mormon on a Mission”.

At under three minutes long, “Surface of the Sun” seemed to fly by much quicker than I would have liked. This fifth song brings back the acoustic-like vibes heard in the opening track while continuing with the energy that Wiff does so well. Whereas it was the drums that caught me in “Coffee is the Blue Pill”, it was the bass line that caught me on this one. It stands out at points and really adds some special sauce to this already amazing track. Sadly, as mentioned, this track was quick and, before I knew it, fuzzy guitars rocketed me into the final track on this EP, “Mosquito”. A little darker than the previous songs, “Mosquito” had a garage-rock quality to it that I found absolutely infectious. It’s perfectly imperfect in all of the right ways. Although I would have loved for this EP to end on a more anthemic track like “Coffee is the Blue Pill”, I enjoyed that Wiff was still throwing new elements at me up to the very end of this fun listen.

‘Definitely in the Maybe Pile’ really lays out the sound that is Wiff while leaving you wanting so much more from this band. Their sound is unique and familiar at the same time making this an easy listen that also catches you. It was absolutely a perfect listen for a lazy Sunday morning and, although my goal was to review a crap ton of music, I feel like I may just spend the rest of my day digging more into this band.
