I have no witty intro for you right now. I’m still feeling overwhelmed by this week and stressed over all of the things I need to do this weekend and the lack of air conditioning. Dear Boy Destroy– please be the distraction I need and give me the boost of energy that I am looking for!

Boy Destroy’s ‘Warpaint EP’ opens up with “Warpaint”. Vulnerable lyrics and an infectious beat wasted no time taking over my house and giving me a sense of relief. Although there’s a heaviness that comes with the lrycis and the way they are presented, there’s also an undeniable sense of energy that comes from the drums and the overall movement of this opening track. There’s a youthful spirit in this opening song but you can feel that Boy Destroy is wise beyond his years with the vocal styling and word choice. I’m intrigued and can’t wait to dig into the other five tracks on this EP.

“You Don’t Want Me When I’m Sober” continues with the dark lyrics juxtaposed by an infectious beat. Honestly, the lyrics are nothing short of heartbreaking but this track doesn’t feel dark or moody. It honestly feels like a complete bop that I could see myself jamming to while driving with the windows down. I love the sensitivity that comes through on this track but just as I was finding the right words to describe that more in detail, the album had already moved onto “Favourite”. Either I’ve heard this song or it’s super reminiscent of something else I’ve heard lately. Regardless, this is a stand-out track for me. Although the previous two tracks absolutely showcase the vocal prowess of Boy Destroy, I feel like you really get to see that element in full force during this track.

Fourth on this EP is “As Time Goes By”. This track opens up with a beautiful and emotive piano part before Boy Destroy’s vocals come in with a whole new vibe. There’s something a bit rawer about this track that I fell head over heels for instantly. It’s not just in the minimalistic approach to the instrumentation, it’s also the tone in the vocals. They just have a bit more of a tenderness to them that is impossible to not fall in love with. Although every track comes with an emotional weight on this EP, the heaviness of this track got me and I was stuck.

“Beautiful Crimes” seems to expand on the tenderness laid out in “As Time Goes By” but matches it with a more pop-based vocal styling which makes it feel like a completely different style of tenderness. out of all of the tracks on this EP, this is the one that I could hear on the radio and the one that I think will break Boy Destroy into the level that he so deserves to be on. There’s just something super commercial and accessible about this track while it doesn’t sacrifice any emotion or distinctive style that has been laid out on the previous tracks.

Ending this stunningly powerful EP is “Lights Out”. Although I was expecting this track to hit hard like the opening few tracks, Boy Destroy continues to showcase the pure beauty and tenderness that his style has. Lyrically, this may be my favorite track on this release. I’m not going to give the words away because, well, that’s no fun, but I will say pay particular attention to the words and the way each word comes with a different feeling as if to accentuate the meaning behind each syllable.

There’s something fresh and new about this EP. It’s youthful and almost bridges into the cloud hop genre that is so hot right now among the youths but there’s something so much deeper about this EP. Boy Destroy has a sound for the kids and lyrics for the lost and wandering of all ages. It’s a beautiful album that absolutely deserves your attention and has me so excited about the future of this amazing musician.
