The cover of Awesome Possum’s ‘Ruby Red Alarm Clock Radio’ was just what I wanted to see tonight. It’s bright and cartoony and I have a feeling is just what I need to hear so let’s jump into this quick three-song EP and see what it’s all about!
The title track, “Ruby Red Alarm Clock Radio”, starts this all-too-quick EP off right. The beat is super fresh and freeing while still instantly demanding attention. The smile that had taken over my face only grew as the vocals came in. They match the instrumentation. Sweet and fairly soft while instantly catching my ear and pulling me into the world that is Awesome Possum. Part of me kept waiting for this track to reach a climax but another part of me really loved how this track stayed just slightly subdued and understated. The almost quietness and calmness of this track were just what I needed tonight and, after listening to this opening track in full, I don’t think there’s a single thing that I would change about it.
“Talk To Me” continues with the warm and calming vibe laid out in “Ruby Red Alarm Clock Radio” but it brings a little attitude to the forefront which made this an instant favorite of mine. The type of attitude in this song is not the same type of attitude that I look for when it comes to my typical rock and metal music. It’s far from in your face but each word just seems to come with an extra weight attached to it while not feeling heavy. I love the addition of a horn in this song. I feel like it really fills out the overall sound of the track and acts as one of those little surprises that caught me off guard and kept me super interested and with my ears glued to my speakers.
Three songs are never enough and I found myself super disappointed as “Two Minds” rushed “Talk To Me” off of my speakers and signaled the ending of this EP. Another track that continues to lay out Awesome Possum’s beautiful and calming yet fun vibe, this final song takes the attitude of “Talk To Me” and repurposes it as a sense of swagger. The vocals take a more sultry sound to them and the instrumentation has a more laid-back approach creating a super sexy ending to an amazing release. This is one of those songs that is so easy to get lost in therefore making it fly by and, sadly, that meant I was quickly left in the silence of my house.
Three songs are not enough but, thankfully, Awesome Possum has other music out there including a stellar new single entitled “Come Back To Me”. I highly suggest you check out all of his material because it is more than worth your time!
