XOAN’s “Down in the Gutter” had me sold within just the first few seconds. Heavy guitars, pounding drums– it is just perfect and really draws you in in a perfect way. Although the vocals lack that sense of aggression that I typically look for, I love the emotion that comes attached with every word and love the way they seem to contrast the heavier instrumentation. The track is almost a bit conflicted. Every time I thought the vocals would really ramp up, they would go to an almost easy listening place and, when I thought they would calm down, they would turn into a shouted style that hit me right to the core. To say this song is unexpectedly explosive would be an understatement.
Throughout this track you get tastes of an almost 90s vibe to a more modern feel. There are moments where there’s an almost commercialized vibe to the track but those are quickly followed by bursts of energy and power. This song is all over the place but it works as a whole and has a super unique feeling throughout.
