It’s one of those mornings where I don’t know what I want to listen to. Ska? Punk? 90s alt-rock? I’ve been all over the place already and I’ve only been up for a couple of hours. Even though I feel indecisive and truly can’t settle on a style, band, or even playlist, Chipped Nail Polish’s “Say Something” hit the spot and instantly brought me a sense of calm that I so desparately needed.
A little indie pop with slight nods to a pop-punk nostalgia that I am constantly seeking, this song is chill but has an undeniable sense of energy in it. The booming drums seem to counter the almost lo-fi styled vocals throughout this track in a marvelous way. Although the entire track is great and the lyrics are poignant, it’s vocalist and Chipped Nail Polish mastermind Jill Sullivan who had my attention throughout this five minute set. Her vocals are just so emotive without trying too hard. They seem to come easy to her which makes them flow easily into your heart and soul.
Five minutes is long for a track for me. My attention span is just not what it used to be these days but I felt completely captivated throughout this track just due to the epic ebb and flow felt throughout the song so sit back, relax, take a deep breath, and enjoy “Say Something”.
