Sometimes I see bands sign to labels and question why. Maybe it’s a money grab for the label, maybe the band has something that I just don’t see but, long story short, I’m typically surprised by bands signing to certain labels. That being said, after hearing “if you ever leave long island” from Ryan Cassata, it is clear why he was just signed to Kill Rock Stars Records.
This is an upbeat and fun track but with a clear message. It’s a song that Ryan wrote for his best friend, begging him to not commit suicide and, instead, move away from the hometown. Even though this is a classic pop-punk message with a classic pop-punk vibe when it comes to the song, this track is anything but cliche. There’s so much heart throughout this song and, although Ryan seems super young in the video but this song feels like it’s from a songwriter who has been doing this for decades. The word choice, although simplistic, is just so perfect and hits so hard.
Beyond the music, can we just talk about how fun this video is? It’s fun and quirky and I love seeing how expressive Ryan is throughout the track. I feel like it just adds that special something that truly sets Ryan apart from the rest. I say this a lot but I truly expect huge things from Ryan Cassata so jump on this train now and be on the ground level as this amazing human gains the notoriety that he honestly deserves.
