I love hearing new music from all over the planet but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t get a little more excited when I hear a stellar single that is from right here in the Twin Cities. That’s exactly what happened when Mae Simpson’s “Call It What You Will” came across my desk. I was mindlessly checking out submissions but was struck by this one. I knew it was familiar but, when I checked to see who it was, I was honestly a little surprised to see Mae’s name attached to it. Don’t get me wrong, I adore Mae and know she’s a powerhouse along with the rest of her band but “Call It What You Will” just blended in so perfectly with all of the other submissions I was going through and I was a bit stunned to realize that this perfection was coming from an act I was familiar with.
Okay, enough of me ranting about how much I love Mae, this song really speaks for itself. Although I would easily put Mae Simpson into just a standard good ol’ fashioned rock n’ roll box, Mae would refuse that and I don’t blame her. You get that rock n’ roll sensibility throughout “Call It What You Will” but you also get Mae’s distinct blend of a little bit of everything else. There are moments where the vocals seem to have an almost Southern influence to them and others that would challenge every pop songstress on the radio today. The instrumentation follows suit seamlessly swapping a big-band sound for something a bit more tender and chill. Sit back and dive into the world of Mae Simpson. Dip your toe in with “Call It What You Will” but prepare yourself to jump in heart first into her world after inevitably falling head over heels for this track and Mae Simpson’s sound.
