Girl at the Rock Shows

I’ll be honest, I hate the name of this band. Okay, hate is a strong word but I had to think twice before pressing play on “Anchors” from Racist Kramer. There’s just something almost triggering about the word “racist” and I don’t know who Kramer is or anything like that but I just honest-to-God didn’t like the band name. My hand slipped (okay, that’s a lie, curiosity got the best of me) and I ended up hitting play and instantly falling in love with Racist Kramer even if I was hesitant about their band name.

“Anchors” isn’t a new song as it came out two years ago but the message behind this track is just as relevant now as it was then. This song is a reminder of how important and impactful mental health is. I like that you can feel an almost frantic energy in this song because I feel like it mirrors the energy of a mental health breakdown but then the chorus comes in with an undeniable sense of power as if to bring you a sense of calm after a mild freakout. It’s a powerful track and I don’t know if the composition was meant to be as deep as I’m taking it but it’s absolutely perfect. With a classic punk vibe and a slight pop-punk twist, “Anchors” instantly reminded me of Strung Out but also had nods to everything from Face To Face to Set Your Goals sprinkled throughout the nearly four minutes.

I was so in love with this band and song after I heard it that I just had to know more about the band name so, here’s what the band had to say: “We are all big Seinfeld fans, and watching a brilliant actor completely derail his career and life in one moment of bigotry and stupidity is sort of a talisman for us,” says bassist James Peterson. “There’s always work to do, always room to improve. It’s not so much about mocking [Michael Richards] as it is about being compassionate and accepting of all human beings, even or especially when life is sorta kicking you in the ass.”

Long story short, the band name, although brash, is actually perfect much as “Anchors” is.
