I’ve seen audio engineers try to jump into the performance side of things before and, I have to be honest, it typically doesn’t translate for me. I feel like engineers are too obsessed with the particular sound of everything and forget about the organic chemistry you have to have with your instrument in order to really pull off an amazing song. That being said, Colorado-based trash. has changed my mind of this.
Although trash. was started by a couple of audio engineers, their song “Bully” has more heart that I could possibly begin to put into words. Although this song is only three minutes and forty-five second long, I feel like I went through a whole lifetime of emotions as it played. trash. seamlessly switches through feelings and styles throughout this song. It’s enough to make your head spin but the way trash. pieces these different modes together throughout this track is absolutely genius and keeps you from overthinking it. As mentioned, I didn’t expect this from a project started by two engineers because it definitely highlights the organic magic that music needs so I was pleasantly surprised and in love. Much like the overall style of the track, the vocals seem to run the gamut as far as what they portray. You get chill love-song like moments contrasted by more angsty almost Riot Grrrl feeling moments. All in all, this song may be a rollercoaster but it’s a ride I never wanted to get off of and neither will you.
