I’m a musical theater geek. Always have been, always will be. Not sure if you’ve picked up on it yet but I try to cover every musical that rolls through the Twin Cities but it doesn’t stop there. I also love music that has a theatrical component to it and that’s exactly what you get with “Reckless” from John in a Strange Land.
“Reckless” is a dramatic and, yes, theatrical, song about the desperation that comes with a rocky relationship. I’ll be honest, I didn’t even catch onto this storyline until a couple of listen just because I was so captivated by the overall style of this song. It seriously feels like it’s straight out of a musical production. It’s just so dramatic with the highs and lows that flow throughout this nearly four and a half minute long song. On top of that, the vocals of this song instantly command your attention. Again, I don’t mean the words, I mean the vocals in general. They are almost threatening in a way and force your ears into a submission of sort. Stylistically, this song is a bit post-punk, a bit indie-rock and all heart which just adds to the captivating nature of the song. You may not be sure of what’s coming next in this song but you know it’s going to be something good so buckle up and take the ride that is “Reckless” from John in a Strange Land.
