Girl at the Rock Shows

You can take the girl out of the 2000s emo scene, but you can’t take the 2000s emo scene out of the girl. Whenever I see the name Helena, I instantly think of My Chemical Romance. I know it’s my burden, something I have to live with every day, but, thankfully, I don’t run into the name often (although, shout out to my old boss at the record store in Des Moines who has the sweetness child named Helena) but did when “P’s Get Degrees” from this Australian band came across my desk. My head instantly went into My Chemical Romance mode. I could feel myself wanting to dig through my purse for a Sharpie so I could do my nails and I instantly craved a new piercing. That’s when I hit play on this brilliant single and it changed my world forever.

No longer will I only think of My Chemical Romance when I hear the name Helena; I will now be thinking of Helena. from Perth, Australia, because of the way their new single commanded my attention with ease. One of the tracks off of Helena.’s upcoming EP due out in March, “P’s Get Degrees,” has everything you could ever ask for from a pop-punk anthem. It’s catchy, it has gang vocals, and it has that slight edge to it that blurs the line ever so slightly between pop, punk-punk, and post-hardcore. The edge is subtle in this one but seems to give Helena.’s overall sound that extra chutzpah to make it really stand out in a scene that, at times, can feel so oversaturated. On top of that, there’s an undeniable sense of passion and tenderness with some of the vocals that just adds to the magic that is Helena.’s signature sound. Long story short, let “P’s Get Degrees” from Helena. break the curse of the name Helena and fall in love with this amazing group.
