Monday night and Tuesday night were both thrilling, but for two different reasons. Monday was thrilling due to the night’s whole “trying not to get smashed” element. I found myself on the edge of an intense pit and loved the adrenaline it gave me as I tried to shield my camera and body from taking any massive hits (thankfully, I came out of that show unscathed). Tuesday night, I felt a rush of adrenaline with the same kind of feeling but for a different reason. Tuesday’s adrenaline rush came from seeing two absolutely incredible bands and being lifted off into a world where nothing matters other than the beat, the funk, and the passion.
Denver-born, Nashville-based VEAUX set the mood so perfectly for Tuesday night’s show. Their charm started radiating from the stage as soon as the trio took the stage, and it was only magnified as the group played through their set. If I had to put VEAUX into a single box, it would be the alt-pop box, but that doesn’t seem fair to this group’s creativity. There was a definite groove that persisted throughout every single song that they performed. I fell in love with the funky beats and the soulful words that went with them; all the while, you had this almost Justin Timberlake-esque beat and dazzle happening behind it. Sure, it was all very poppy, and I felt that there were times when backing tracks almost took away from the group’s genius, but overall, it was the kind of music that made you want to dance.
The charm of VEAUX didn’t just come from their music but also from their interactions with the young audience. Although their time spent bantering with the crowd was few and far between, they made it worth it. From a slight at any grown man who is still on Snapchat (you can find this band on all standard platforms except for Snapchat because, as vocalist Aaron Wagner put it, Snapchat is the devil) to introducing the band and talking about how drummer Dominick Wagner (Aaron’s brother) is the favorite of the family and they all know it, there was a feeling of informality that made it so easy to fall in love with this band. It also made it easy to relate to them. Although I had never heard their music before or had even heard of their band, VEAUX instantly made me a fan, and I genuinely hope they meant it when they said they would be back soon.
I’ll be honest, I decided to check out this show purely because of the name of the headlining group- Post Sex Nachos. I mean, come on. How was I going to resist that? Even my dad let out a chuckle when I told him what band I was going to see. I may have come because of a cheesy and slightly insane band name, but I left completely in love and enamored by this bombastic group.
Post Sex Nachos is an equal-part boy band, funk group, and jazz-inspired jam band (although that classification gets a bit blurry). Their sound is huge, which isn’t surprising, being that this is a five-piece band, and they were following up a trio, but it was more than that. Every note hit, and it hit hard. The show was loud and intense but in a completely different way than what I spoke about when it came to Monday night’s show. This one hit in an infectious way. Although I’ve been feeling a bit under the weather lately and seem to have hit a low point on Tuesday night, something about their sound and presentation of said sound had me moving and grooving to their infectious beats even though all I really wanted to do was crawl into bed to stop my achy body from aching.
Much like VEAUX, Post Sex Nachos has more charm than just what comes through in their music. This band walked out to the sounds of the opening of a baseball game. An announcer stated the names of each member one by one, along with giving a slightly hilarious description of each. I don’t remember exactly how each member was described, but I remember laughing along with the rest of the audience as the band members struck their pose before taking their places on stage. The way this group connected with their audience was another thing that really struck me about their personalities. I may have never seen or even heard this band outside of their quirky name, but it was clear that this was the night many fans had been waiting for, and the band members were going to make sure it was one to remember.
Before the show started, I witnessed a lot of hugs and light-hearted conversations happening with the band and fans around their merch table. This is such a small element to Tuesday night’s show, yet it definitely left a significant impression on me. Post Sex Nachos is a hard-working band. From all I can tell, they are road warriors and are constantly putting new music and content out there on top of touring. These kids have enough going on where they don’t have to worry about meeting everyone at every dang show, but from what I saw on Tuesday night, that’s exactly what they did. This told me everything I needed to know about Post Sex Nachos. This band is more than just a quirky name and a funky sound. They are a group of people who genuinely love playing music and genuinely love their fans, making them a new favorite of mine.
