Snow days in your thirties just aren’t the same as they used to be. There’s no going outside with a Thermos of hot chocolate and working with the neighbors to create an epic snow fort. There are no snow fights and no trekking snow through the house to go to the bathroom just to turn around and go back outside again. No. It’s not fun anymore. Now it’s trying to get caught up on work and trying to tidy up the house while trying not to get lost in the guilt of not making it into work for the day. What happened to the whimsy behind a snow day? What happened to the fun and the lack of fear of getting sick from being out in the cold for so long? This has nothing to do with “blessings” from apocalypseboyo but this is the song that is quickly becoming the theme song of my snow day.
I like the eerie aura that this nearly four-minute long track instantly casts through the air. “blessings” is haunting and intentional with poignant lyrics that seem to cut through the ambiance of the instrumentation like a warm knife through butter. I love that, although the vocals and lyrics take the spotlight throughout this song, the instrumentation does a great job of creating a soundscape for said vocals to soar. Although the instrumentation stays fairly low key throughout this song, the vocals don’t. They are highlighted by moments of sheer rage and panic but the lush soundscape helps almost hide the staggering amount of emotion that comes through with some of the words and phrases. Overall, “blessings” is one of those songs that is so easy to get lost in. Is it rock? Is it rap? Is it experimental? Is it avant-garde? I honestly don’t know. All I know is that “blessings” from apocalypseboyo absolutely caught my attention and has yet to let go.
