Girl at the Rock Shows

I was looking forward to a super chill weekend, but it didn’t end up being that way. Between an outdoor show on Saturday during the day, my dad and stepmom being in town on Saturday night for dinner, and then a baby shower for my sister-in-law, followed by a graduation party for my boyfriend’s niece on Sunday, I ended up having next to no free time this weekend. I was okay with that. I don’t get to see my dad and stepmom much, and although it was a lot of family time, it was so lovely to see people I don’t get to see very often. That being said, I was ready for either a show or a good night’s sleep when it came to Sunday night, and with Nobro and Bad Waitress pulling through town, I knew that sleep was going to have to wait because there was no way I was missing this show.

Local rockers Big Salt took the stage first at The 7th Street Entry on Sunday night. This is a local band that, if you’re not already paying attention to, you should start paying attention to immediately. Stylistically, the best way to describe Big Salt’s music is just rock, but that doesn’t do them justice. There is a little bit of everything woven into their sound, from punk tendencies to an almost psychedelic undertone that is highlighted by a more 80s metal chug from guitars. It’s a unique sound and one that, on paper, should not work, but the members of this band pull it off so flawlessly. The way that they fill every single beat with a sound that is so lush and texturized while holding onto every note for the exact right amount of time is something about this band that will never get old.

Don’t get me wrong, I love every single member of this band immensely, but it’s vocalist Sally Linda who consistently leaves me in awe. This woman’s vocals are stunning and sting in all of the right ways. The amount of power that she can put into every word is insane, and the way she can hit some of the highest of highs right after being situated in some of the deepest and darkest abilities of her vocals is genuinely something to be admired. Again, this band is so much more than just Sally, and I could go on and on about the talent of all four members of this band, but it was Sally’s vocals that really just hit me and left me a bit dazed on Sunday night.

Up next was Nobro. I caught this band at Punk Rock Bowling in Las Vegas a couple of weeks ago, and that’s how I knew this was going to be a show I couldn’t miss. I had been anxious to see this band as I have been hooked on their song “LALA” for a couple of weeks now. I got hooked by their intensity in that song and became straight-up obsessed after seeing that intensity play out on the Punk Rock Bowling stage. I was super excited about seeing them in a more intimate setting to see if it would translate.

The energy translated perfectly. Although the crowd on Sunday night wasn’t a huge one, they had everyone in the audience eating it up and bouncing to their infectious beats. Vocalist Kathryn McCaughey had this way of connecting with everyone in the room without saying much between songs. She just sang with such a feeling of ferocity and tenacity that there was no escaping her grasp. Add in the glittery guitar solos, perfectly curated drum fills, and the steady bass notes that were floating through the air, and you were left with a set that left you feeling both energized and exhausted all at the same time.

Closing out the Sunday night show was Bad Waitress- another band that I had caught at Punk Rock Bowling. Unlike Nobro, I knew nothing about Bad Waitress when I saw them at Punk Rock Bowling, but within a few songs of that set, I had a new favorite, so I was excited to see what these Canadian rockers could do with a smaller space. Much like Nobro, Bad Waitress had no problem filling the space with their angsty punk rock sound and didn’t struggle to get the audience into their set. Although they did kill it at Punk Rock Bowling, I felt a bit more moved by their set on Sunday night in the more intimate setting. I’m not sure why that was, as I recognized the same songs being played, but there was something a bit more “everything to prove, nothing to lose” feeling about their set on Sunday night that really hit me right in the heart and soul.

Again, like I saw during Nobro’s set, the audience may have been on the smaller side, but they were mighty. I loved the fact that there were people in the audience who were singing along to every word while others ran and bounced around the room, being careful not to knock anyone too hard while also not letting a single second of Bad Waitress’ set pass them by. I definitely fell deeper in love with this band on Sunday night due to their performance, but it was witnessing the way the audience responded that really had me swooning over this band.

It was a wild weekend, and, in retrospect, I probably could have spent more time with my family or more time getting caught up on work before Monday morning hit. I could have done a million things differently, but one thing I did right was passing up on an early bedtime to get to this show because, truthfully, Big Salt, Nobro, and Bad Waitress set the tone for my week so perfectly with what they gave me at the show.
