This has been the longest January ever. I’m not the only one who feels that way. Minnesota isn’t the only place where it feels like that. I think we are all feeling it, so I was glad to say goodbye to January and was so honored to do so at such a beautiful show.
The 7th Street Entry was packed by the time I arrived, late. I feel so terrible that I was late to the party, but I had met up with a good friend, and we were having a great discussion over dinner and, honestly, just lost track of time. I did make it just in time to catch the final track from the opening act, Anything You Want. Not only did I feel bad that I had missed the majority of their quick set, but I also hated the fact that I missed it because, within the first few notes of their final song, I was enamored by this band. Their sound was very folk-rock based. The sound was soft, but the energy this band was giving off was nothing short of electric. Vocalist Lena Nine was captivating. I don’t know what it was about her, but her beauty, combined with the angelic voice she was projecting over the speakers, had me hooked instantly. My sincerest apologies to Anything You Want for missing their entire set. I will be back to see you again, I promise, because just one song was not enough for me.
Local band Gramma has been on my list for a hot minute. I’m a contributor to the local zine Tumbling Rock, and the team is obsessed with this band. I wanted to know why. I had heard their music before and, yeah, it was good, but I feel like I have heard more about their live shows than their actual music, and I was stoked to experience it for myself. I was not let down. This trio has an insane amount of power behind them. There’s grit and sweat that drips from every single word of every single song. That mixed with their grunge-infused punk anthems creates a vibe. There’s no other way to put it. Although I felt like I was going into their set fairly blind, I was alone in that. Within the first song, the young-leaning audience had worked themselves into a sweaty mess of flying limbs. It wasn’t as dramatic as some shows and definitely wasn’t the most intense pit I’ve ever seen, but there was something about the audience’s reaction that really just added to the magic of Gramma’s set.
With the energy set high, the evening concluded with Agnes Uncaged. Had I researched ahead, I would have realized this band is actually creeping charlie reimagined—a group I’d long admired and missed. Their evolution brought their signature fire to the forefront, retaining the tender elements I remember from their earlier days. This new form felt both familiar and exciting, carrying the night forward from Gramma’s energy.
Saturday night was not just another show for Agnes Uncaged. It was the album release show in support of their new release ‘Cyanotype.’ Being that I did zero research into this band prior to this show, I couldn’t tell you if we only heard songs from that album or heard more but I can tell you that this is an album (and anything else Agnes Uncaged has out there) I will be listening to on repeat throughout today as I try to power through some chores and work. I loved the balance this band has found in their sound. Sure, you get this sensitive, coming-of-age kind of vibe that makes me definitely feel my age more than I would like, but at the same time, you get this sense of fire behind it that makes every song feel slightly more anthemic than the rest. Agnes Uncaged isn’t afraid to play with space. They aren’t afraid to be soft and vulnerable, but within that vulnerability that comes through in some of their softer songs, you still get an angst that makes every song feel like a little rollercoaster ride of emotions.
This month has been hard on all of us. January 2026 is something that I will never forget. A whirlwind of emotions, strife, tragedy, depression, exhaustion, honestly, nothing good, but at least I got to end it on a high note.
