Girl at the Rock Shows

I just shared some of my coffee with a co-worker. I’m not super happy about it as this is my lifeblood when I’m stuck at the office but, at the same time, I felt for her. She opened the coffee pot here in the office to make her own pot only to find fuzzy things growing on the inside of the pot and filter. Nobody should have to go a day without coffee, so I shared and am not trying to conserve what I have left. None of this has anything to do with “Epitaph” from Big Fat Meanies.

This is an epic track at just under four and a half minutes long, but it truly doesn’t feel that long. As the band describes themselves, they are a “high octane, horn-driven, prog rock” group. I know that seems like too many words strung together that shouldn’t be put together, but truth be told, it’s the only way to describe the sound here. The vocals are powerful and almost angelic but come at you with an undeniable sense of angst and slight aggression. The instrumentation, although it takes a back seat to the vocals for the most part, is epic. It truly just feels so cinematic and larger-than-life, creating an entire world to explore throughout this song. I love the way the tenderness of the vocals clashes with the instrumentation to create this slight sense of tension until the vocals take a turn. All of a sudden, this song will start to shout at you before giving way to a bombastic horn solo that is as creative as it is emotive. Truthfully, this song is all over the place, and the first time I listened to it, I knew I had missed stuff I really liked so now, here I sit, with this song playing for the umpteenth time, and I still can’t get over everything this band has fit into just four and a half minutes of time. Seriously, check it out for yourself, but brace yourself for the journey that Big Fat Meanis will take you on when it comes to “Epitaph.”
