Girl at the Rock Shows

I chopped all my hair off over the weekend. I needed a change, and although it feels nice, it also feels oh-so-very weird. I keep reaching for my luscious mullet and finding nothing back there, which has me wondering if chopping it all off was the right choice. This has nothing to do with “Inkerta” from Pinghost but it’s where my head is at right now so… you’re welcome.

In the pitch for this song, Pinghost called it their “most demanding song to listen to.” When I first read that, I didn’t quite know what it meant, but within seconds, I understood. A love letter to the late 2000s/early 2010s math/metalcore scene, this song is all over the place compositionally. It’s seemingly random, with breaks and notes that clutter this three-minute, nineteen-second song, but as a whole, it comes together into a beautiful thought and a relentless assault on the ears that is as challenging as it is beautiful. The song itself is about the fear that comes with change. It’s abut changing the familiar and getting lost in the unknown. I love how that is translated so perfectly into the instrumentation of this song. Some moments may feel foreign. Somewhere, maybe you think things are going to fall apart, but trust Pinghost just like you trust yourself. There’s beauty here, and it’s a magical thing when you find it.
