This weekend has been a whirlwind and it’s hard to believe it is already Sunday afternoon. I feel like I’m running out of time to get everything done that I had planned to do this weekend but I’m trying not to get discouraged. I need a soundtrack to keep me going through my afternoon slump and I’m really hoping We Are Monroe’s new 3-song EP, ‘Movements’, does the trick.
“NEW ECONOMY” starts this quick EP off and doesn’t hold back. A little new-wave, a little dark and very post-punk, this opening track lays out the unique and perfect sound that is We Are Monroes in a gorgeous way. The beat is fairly upbeat while the vocals bring that new-wave darkness to the forefront. Infectious and powerful, this is the type of song that instantly gets stuck in your head. I found myself nodding along to this track as the mood shifted subtly but drastically as if approving of the changes. Although they seem stark, the shifts in mood make sense and made this nearly four-minute song feel like it was over in just the blink of an eye.
A strong synth sound kicks off “BABY LOVE” before the track jumps into another infectious song that instantly got stuck in my head. I really can not stress how cool the blend of styles and genres is when it comes to this band. There are nods to bands of years gone by with the almost new-wave and 80’s style of some of the vocals and instrumentation but the way they are blended with something a little bit more standard indie-op makes it feel modern and fresh. Although it’s hard to pick a favorite when there are only three songs on a release, “Baby Love” was absolutely an instant favorite of mine because it really showcases that blend of new and old in a perfect way while giving you a track that is easily danceable and makes you smile.
Ending this all too quick EP is “DISORDER” which easily finds a balance between the first two tracks. It has a powerful almost dark, new-wave vibe like “NEW ECONOMY” did but it also has a dancey element that felt fresh and optimistic like “BABY LOVE”. We Are Monroe’s mantra is “making music for closet dancers” and that really makes a lot of sense when listening to this track. There’s just something so infectious and so fun about this final track that, even if you’re like me and refuse to dance in public, it will have you dancing around your living room like a fool as your cats watch you with eyes of judgment.
This EP is too quick. Although it lays out We Are Monroe’s sound perfectly, it left me wanting so much more. I have a lot more to do today but I have a feeling I’ll be spending the majority of my time digging into more music from this unique and amazing band.
