“Emily, If She Be There…” by The Polychromatics is everything I look for in a song. Although it’s a chill track, there’s a creepiness not only hidden in the music but also shown in the super creative music video that comes with it. Strong vocals, laidback instrumentation with an intense crescendo to the end of the song– seriously, just absolutely perfect. Luckily, I was given the opportunity to ask this band a bit more about this song, the band, and everything else that was on my mind!
Just so you’re not confused– the person who answered these questions is the name at the beginning of each answer!
Pick between It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, The Office, or Parks & Rec
(John) It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Now that you’ve picked, please assign each band member as a character from said show
(John)
John is Dennis
Gisli is Charlie
Isaac is Mac
Jordan is Sweet Dee
Jimmy is Cricket
Cory is Frank
Everyone says that every crowd is their favorite but, what city has the best audience and why is it Minneapolis?
(Cory) Minneapolis is fantastic and all, but Philly is really where we have felt the most love from our audience so far
What’s your go-to purchase at a gas station (outside of gas) when on a road trip?
(Isaac) Prepackaged hard boiled eggs and an energy drink. Delicious and Nutritious
What’s the worst concert you’ve ever been to and why?
(John) Brian Wilson at Camden NJ…Not because of Brian…He’s the best. Only because the venue mixed the sets up on the billing and we (the Emily of Emily, If She Be There) ended up missing half of his set because we were “late..”
Favorite lyrics of all time?
(John) Pink Floyd’s Time
Tired of lying in the sunshine, staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun
If you were to rob a bank, what would be the song playing in the getaway car as you escape?
(Isaac) “Heartworm” By Thee Oh Sees
If you could compare yourself to an animal, what would it be and why?
(Cory) Probably a Lion. Gotta be fearless to play Rock n Roll
Have you ever been able to finish a Rubik’s Cube?
(Cory) Actually, yes, it’s mainly algorithms to memorize. Kinda like drumming haha
What was the first concert you ever went to?
(John) Alice In Chains with William DuVall at The Tower
What’s one thing I should know before listening to “Emily, If She Be There…”?
(Isaac) It’s a trip. Take it easy, but take it.
Who is Emily to you?
(John) Emily is my partner actually
The video for this song is so creative and visually impressive- Did you come up with all of that?
(John) Yes, this project was taken stem to stern through The Poly’s creative process. Each member contributed to the project in their specific skill set including recording the song and doing the video ourselves.
There’s a plot twist in this track (which I will not ruin because I want everyone to listen to it and watch the video) but, speaking of plot twists– what has been you favorite plot twist in a book, movie, or TV show?
(Isaac) When Bruce Willis turned out to be a ghost…
Psychedelic vibes, singer-songwriter feels– this track is calming but so full of life! Can we expect more songs like this and maybe even an album?!
(John) Yes, a full-length album is in the works! It is in the very early stages of pre-production and demoing. The goal is to release a few more EPs with this line up, and really flesh out our recordings…We hope the full-length album encompasses facsimiles of our best bits off the all our EPs released to date. (Recollect, Faberge Egg, Sequences From The Punch Dimension, and two more recordings we are working on simultaneously.) We want the album to feel like a culmination of those previous works.
**Disclaimer** Jordan Schreiber, Michael Gisli and Jimmy Arvan were away during this interview but send their gratitude to everyone who checks out the video!
Getting a little look into the minds of John, Isaac, and Cory definitely shines some light in the creativity felt throughout “Emily, If She Be There…”. I’ll be honest, I was a bit surprised to find out this amazing track was written about John’s partner but, looking back, it makes sense. There’s so much care and precision throughout this track. Heck, I think that may just be The Polychromatics’ style and I am absolutely here for it.
