Happy Wednesday everyone! It’s kind of a gloomy and dark day up here in Minneapolis today but “Caution Tape” from Jake Kulak & The Modern Vandals has my house feeling bright and full of life.
This song is the perfect blend of indie pop and rock rock, and everything in-between. It’s a fun little bop with vintage feeling vocals that instantly reminded me of Two Door Cinema Club but with an edge. Although Jake’s vocals are clearly smooth, they have a slight raspiness to them throughout this track that I found intriguing and perfect. With heavy synth and guitar work, the vocals remain the highlight of this track but also give you a chance to check out all of the other magic in this track by not just hogging the spotlight.
There’s something relatable and, honestly, a bit simple, about the lyrics. With a core addressing inner conflicts and battles that we all face on a day to day basis, I loved how accessible I found this song. It’s one of those songs that will surely hit perfectly regardless of how you are feeling at any given moment.
