I’m all about punk rock. I’m also all about musicals. So the fact that Home Street Home is a punk rock musical written by the one and only Fat Mike of NOFX obviously has my attention.
I’m not going to give away the whole musical but it’s based on true stories and revolves around a 16-year-old runaway who finds herself completely submerged into the deviant subculture and alternative lifestyle of the streets. This song brings the angst that I can only imagine Sue is feeling to the forefront. I honestly couldn’t tell you who is singing on this song in particular as there are a million guests throughout the musical but I can tell you that I am in love with everything about this track. It honestly doesn’t feel like a musical track (which is the genius behind Home Street Home) and feels more like a perfectly constructed surf-punk song with an edge. A bit of a Riot Grrrl vibe comes through throughout this song which, of course, made it an instant favorite of mine.
This is not the first song I’ve heard from the musical and probably won’t be the last I write about but “I Really Hate You” felt like a good starting point to get you interested in the magic that is Home Street Home.
