I have heard a couple of tracks from Ian McFarland and they’ve all been solid but there was something about Ian’s new track, “Trial By Fire”, that really caught me.
There’s a little Death Cab For Cutie influence that comes through loud and clear throughout this track but there’s a spin on this that had me absolutely hooked. It’s the darkness in Ian’s voice. Although that darkness definitely comes from the word choice in this heartbreaking song, it was the darkness in the seemingly upbeat and indie-pop based vocals that really had me sold. It’s subtle. You really have to listen to hear it but, when you do, it completely changes this song and takes it from just another great song to an absolutely brilliant and beautiful piece of art. If you don’t catch onto this darkness, don’t worry, this is still a solid track that will surely make you stop everything and just listen which is all we can really ask for when it comes to music so just sit back and enjoy “Trial By Fire” from Ian McFarland!
