Although I’m super happy these days and, for the first time in years, don’t seem to be plagued with a bout of depression, the name of this band caught me. For When You Can’t Breathe. I don’t care how happy you are or how happy you seem to be, we all have those moments when we feel like we can’t breathe so to see a band name strike such a real chord definitely intrigued me. That’s what drew me in but “I Don’t Wanna Be Friends” from For When You Can’t Breathe is more than just a song from a band with a catchy title, this song is truly For When You Can’t Breathe.
The first single from For What You Can’t Breathe’s debut album, this song will instantly catch you. A classic and nostalgia-fueled emo-pop-punk sound takes over within just a couple of seconds but, more importantly, you are greeted with a sense of comfort and warmth. This song isn’t fast or intense (although, like in life, there are mini breakdowns scattered throughout this track). In fact, it’s quite slow moving and somber yet it fills you with this sense of undeniable energy in a strange way. Each note comes drenched with equal parts beauty and emotion creating a soundscape that is so easy to get lost in. If you’re having a bad day and one of those days where you just can’t catch your breath, “I Don’t Wanna Be Friends” comes in as a shoulder to lean on. If you’re having a great day, “I Don’t Wanna Be Friends” hits you like a classic pop-punk anthem reminding you of when things were just a bit more simple. Long story short, “I Don’t Wanna Be Friends” from For When You Can’t Breathe is perfect for all occasions and is definitely a song worth your attention.
