For the first time in weeks, I’m fully caught up on emails (knock on wood). It feels a bit weird. I feel accomplished, but also feel like, since I’m caught up, maybe that means I’m been slacking on work. I know that that’s not fully true. I’m a workaholic through and through and am constantly pumping out emails faster than they are coming in, so how am I caught up? Who knows, and I don’t want to question it. I just want to soak this feeling up and celebrate by checking out a new song.

“Freaks” is the debut single from Mermaid Island’s new full-length album. This is a punky and anthemic little bop. At just over two and a half minutes long, it’s a quick listen but one that will fill you with life and energy (and a little piss and vinegar). I love the angst behind this song and the grit that comes through in the vocals, but what really hooked me about this song was the way that, even with that gritty angst, there’s no shortage of catchy and infectious moments scattered throughout this song. There’s a controlled kind of chaos throughout this song that makes it so perfect for an early Tuesday morning if you, like me, seem to be dragging ever so slightly. I don’t know when Mermaid Island’s full-length album is coming out, but I know that I can’t wait to hear more from this LA punk band.
