I am not a huge fan of covers but the second I hear Just Super’s cover of “Everything Is Alright” from Motion City Soundtrack, I knew this would be an exception to the rule for me. Okay, maybe I’m a bit of a snob but I just don’t see the talent in re-doing something someone else has already done. Sure, I know that most covers have a bit of personalization to them hence making them a cover but too many times it’s hard to distinguish a cover from an original. That’s not all the case with this song.
Although it’s instantly recognizable once the words start flowing, nothing else about this track feels like a cover. Jazzy piano breaks followed by lo-fi almost ambient portions make this sound like an original, not a cover. Sure, the chorus is still just as catchy as in the original track but what Just Super has done with the intricacies behind the vocals is just stunning.
After listening to this track a few times, I am wondering why Motion City Soundtrack never had a flute player or took the time to do gang vocals. Is this version of the song better than the original? Honestly, I say yes but you take a listen and let me know what you think!
