I love being a woman in the music industry but, at times, it gets a bit difficult. From being one of the few females at certain shows to being one of the only females putting their opinions out there on the internet for all to read– there are times when I am quickly reminded that I am a rare breed and, at times, it can turn into something a bit scary. It’s nice to be reminded that I am not alone and this is something that women across the world face regardless of their occupation but it’s also sad that we all deal with the same crap. That being said, “Thirsty” from Private Wives addresses this issue in a perfect way.
The attitude in this song is absolutely perfect especially after spending last night in a male-dominated crowd at the Carcass show. Although I had no issues at the show whatsoever and ended up making a lot of new friends, I did feel a bit alienated by being one of the few females in the crowd. This song kind of fits that but takes it a step further talking about men harassing women. I am beyond thankful that this isn’t something I deal with on a daily basis but know there are people in the scene that do and I think this song and it’s riot grrrl attitude definitely helps address it. Sure, the song is mostly about creeps on the internet but I think it goes so much further than that and this song really does cover it from all angles. This song is full of attitude and snark while calling out a huge issues in the music scene and the world we live in in general. Brash and in your face, I can not thank the women of Private Wives enough for making this “angry yet cheeky” song.
