Sometimes when people submit singles to me for review, they send me a long description of the single. I like this because it gives me things to think about and hone in on when listening to a song for the first time. Other people give me zero information and just let the single speak for itself. This can sometimes work and sometimes completely backfire as I misunderstand a song or just miss key parts in it. “Kids in the Yard” from TheShoutingDolls was one of those singles. I was given no information on the band or the song but, in this case, it worked out perfectly.
There doesn’t have to be a long description attached to this song for me to be sold or intrigued. Honestly, the track itself explains everything that I could possibly want to know about this band. Full of heart with a very The Wonder Years pop-punk style with a little extra edge, “Kids in the Yard” kicks off with a welcoming guitar part that has one of the best tones that I’ve heard in a long time. That guitar sound remains a constant throughout this song as emo-drenched vocals come in and out like a rollercoaster of angst. This band doesn’t try to fit too much into this song which is refreshing. They respect calm moments and breaks in the angst creating an atmosphere that is impossible to not get lost in. Sure, I know nothing about this band but, after hearing “Kids in the Yard”, I know this is not going to be the last I hear of TheShoutingDolls.
