To say that “Born Too Late (The Good Old Times)” by SumNight 38 is a pop-punk banger would be an understatement. Right off the bat, you are given a very Blink 182 feeling guitar riff before the song shoots into something a bit reminiscent of Tsunami Bomb or The Interrupters. Although this track goes exactly where you think it’s going to go, there are many moments that stood out to me including the infliction of certain words giving them a bit more of an edge. The placement of these words and the words themselves were absolutely perfect giving this song that extra chutzpah to make it stand out in a genre that, at times, can feel a bit over-saturated.
This song is about being a pop punk kid but being born a bit too late and, honestly, I feel for those that share that sentiment. I was lucky enough to go through my angsty teenage years when pop-punk was hitting its stride (the early 2000s). These musicians may have been born a bit too late but they absolutely nailed the sound and vibe of the good ol’ days in the scene.
Want a trip down memory lane while having a chance to check out a killer new band? Try this song out. I promise it will hit the spot!
