I feel like I was first drawn to “Happening To Me” solely based on the band name, Helena.. I mean, if you’re in your early-mid thirties and grew up in the pop-punk/ emo scene, I don’t need to explain. For those that have no clue what I’m talking about– just look up My Chemical Romance– one of their hit songs was “Helena” and, although I know this is just a name and a name that probably has a million meanings to a million people, it always just reminds me of the good ol’ days. Although that’s what drew me to “Happening To Me”, it’s not what made me stay.
Although I was expecting a daily dose of nostalgia solely based on the name of this Australia-based band, I got more of a modern rock n’ roll vibe and was instantly here for it. “Happening To Me” is neither aggressive nor in your face but it comes with an undeniable sense of anthemic power. At moments, this song reminded me of Rival Sons but, at others, it had a more poppy Relient K vibe to it. Really, it’s all over the place but that power (both emotion and instrumentally) is the thing that stays constant throughout the nearly four-minute long song and that’s what really hooked me here. The small breakdown around the 2:30 minute is expertly placed and done. It’s not over the top or too dramatic as if to shift the entire mood of this track but the intricacies during this small break were more than enough to send shivers up my spine.
