It’s Friday which I know is exciting but it has already been a day today. I need to change my mood because there’s still a lot of day left. The best way to do that? Well, for you it may be going on a walk or just taking a deep breath. For me it’s checking out some new music so let’s dive into “Who We Never Were” from Crossed Keys.
It’s as if the music Gods new exactly what I needed. This song instantly hooked me with the sense of subtle aggression in the instrumentation and the way it matches the angsty yet comforting vocals. You may be reading that description of the vocals thinking that is a huge contradiction (which it is) yet somehow Crossed Keys has pulled it off effortlessly. I feel like listening to “Who We Never Were” both gave me an outlet for some aggression I’ve been feeling today while giving me a boost of energy and confidence to continue on with the day. It makes sense being that this song is a story about doing out best to just survive. With nods to the skate punk and post-hardcore genres throughout the track, everything about “Who We Never Were” just really hit the spot and made me forget about everything else I still have to get done today. I plan on spending some time diving into their album ‘Believes in You’ (which is where this single comes from).
