It’s Monday. The windows are open and the sun is shining. It’s finally starting to feel like spring up here in Minnesota and I could not be more thrilled about it. It has given me a new sense of hope and energy that has only been enhanced by “Old Friend” from Good Terms.
This is a classic pop-punk bop with a modern twist. It starts off leaning into the emo side of the genre before a catchy chorus brings it into a scene that would contain bands like Four Year Strong and old-school Fall Out Boy. You’ll be hit with nostalgia throughout this song but it won’t feel like a song that is just re-doing all of the pop-punk anthems from back in the day. “Old Friend” is capitalized not only by the heart-felt lyrics but also by the more metal leaning guitarwork throughout this song that comes to the forefront right around the 2:30 mark. Sure, pop-punk jam but this song is all over the place and refuses to be put into just one box.
Long story short, “Old Friend” is a Monday kind of song. It will give you a sense of hope and energy that I feel like we could all use a little bit more of on Mondays.
